There was no place like home for Jason Varitek [stats]. The veteran catcher, who has been captain of the Red Sox [team stats] since the 2005 season and holds the franchise record for most games caught (1,439), decided yesterday to exercise his $3 million player option for next season. Varitek, who will turn 38 in April, acted with the knowledge that for the first time in his Red Sox career he will be the club’s backup catcher. Victor Martinez was tagged by general manager Theo Epstein on Monday at the general managers meetings as the No. 1 catcher.
